10 Simple Strategies to Improve Readability and Boost Engagement

A lady an open book over her head

Do you enjoy reading contract details or small print? Many of us don’t; it feels like learning a new language. But that’s exactly how your viewers feel if your posts or articles are full of jargon or complex words. This is a classic example of poor readability, and people give up trying to get it.

Readability is a measure of how easy it is for your audience to understand your writing. It is influenced by your choice of words, sentence structure, and overall organization.

If you want to make your content easier to read, this article is for you. You will learn practical tips to improve readability and how to use plain and concise sentence structure.

Why Readability Matters

There’s so much talk about readability in the digital space, and it’s for good reasons. Readability directly impacts the success of your content in several ways:

  • Improved SEO: Search engines promote content that is easy to read and understand.
  • Increased engagement: It keeps readers interested.
  • Better conversions: Clear and concise content can lead to more conversions, whether it’s likes, sales, sign-ups, or shares.
  • Retain information: If it is easy to read, viewers are more likely to remember it.
  • Comprehend information: Simple language aids in understanding complex ideas.

Strategies to Improve Readability

1. Know Your Audience

A proper understanding of your target audience will guide your content. This entails knowing their needs, knowledge level, interests, and preferred reading style.

If you’re not sure of these traits, social listening will help you find out more about your audience.

2. Use Clear and Concise Language

A good way to improve readability is to use simple, everyday language. Avoid jargon and complex terms, and cut unnecessary words or fillers.

Also, merge short sentences when possible and keep the focus on essential points. Being concise improves clarity, and your audience can easily grasp the information.

3. Structure Your Content

Irrespective of the form of your content, the structure is vital in guiding your viewers. Break down your text into smaller sections with headings and subheadings.

In the same way, bullet points and numbered lists can help you organize your writing. Keep paragraphs short and focused on one main idea, and include white space for some eye rest.

4. Keep Sentences Short

Short sentences can improve readability and the rhythm of your content. The ideal sentence length will, however, depend on the context. But a good starting point is an average length of 15–20 words.

This is not to say that you should keep count when writing; you can sort out the long and complex sentences later. Split them into two or more sentences and use the right punctuation. Also, break down complex sentences into digestible ideas.

A good useful tool for this are Hemmingway Editor, Grammarly, and QuillBot; they are also great for the next strategy.

Examples of active and passive voice

5. Use Active Voice

Active voice makes sentences easier to read and understand because it shows who is doing what.

Imagine telling a friend about a funny event that happened. You’d probably say something like, “I saw a cat chase a dog.” This is an example of an active voice. The subject of the sentence (“I”) is doing the action (seeing).

It’s like a picture where you can see the action happening right in front of you. This makes sentences more direct, concise, and easier to understand.

Note that passive voice is sometimes necessary, but avoid overusing it. It can make your writing dull and difficult to follow.

6. Vary Sentence Structure

Although short sentences make your content easier to understand, you shouldn’t solely use them. It will make your writing monotonous.

Introduce variety by using a mix of simple, compound, and complex sentences. Combine short and long sentences for rhythm to create text that is not only clear but also engaging.

7. Proofread Carefully

No matter how value-packed your content is, errors will make it lose credibility. Editing your content prevents distractions while maintaining focus on your message. Reading your content aloud can help you identify awkward phrases and rhythm issues.

Also, getting input from others can improve clarity and catch missed errors. In addition to this, you can use editing tools, but remember that they are not perfect.

8. Use Visuals

You may think this applies to children’s books only, but you’re far from the truth. Though it depends on the content form and platform, visuals keep your audience engaged.

You can use images, infographics, and videos to break up text and make your content more engaging. They also help to emphasize your points by bringing your content to life.

9. Optimize for Mobile

When you create content on your laptop, you might forget that most of your viewers use mobile devices. No matter how interesting a post or article is, if it is clumped together, you will simply scroll past it.

That’s why you need to ensure your content is also easy to view on smaller screens. Always check the mobile view of your work before you post or publish.

10.Test and Repeat

The best way to know what works is to test and keep testing. Your content may seem readable to you, and tools could back you up, but feedback is a better measure.

You can ask friends or colleagues to go through it and give you feedback. Also, your audience’s reaction is useful. Monitor the performance of your content continuously and adjust as needed.

Conclusion

These strategies will improve the readability of your content. Your posts or articles shouldn’t only be informative but also enjoyable to read.

The ease of understanding can increase your conversion rates and create a stronger online presence. The goal of your content is to always be accessible and engaging for your audience.
